Scope and Content of Collection

The Robert Cleveland negative collection contains 543 8x10 negatives and color transparencies. Robert Cleveland, a commercial architectural photographer working primarily in Southern California, photographed for a number of interior and exterior firms and publications in the 1950s and through the early 1960s. The majority of photographs document the trends in interior and exterior design focusing on particular elements such as appliances, hardware, and building materials. Buildings and sites represented in the collection are located in Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, and Utah. Places of note include Disneyland, Bullock's Westwood, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), the Beverly Hilton, and many banks, small businesses, and private residences.

Original negatives are available by appointment, but must be handled by the Curator of Collections. Images should be requested by their print identification numbers.

Copyright has been assigned to the UCR/California Museum of Photography. All requests for permission to publish be submitted in writing to the Curator of Collections.

Biography

Robert C. Cleveland (1918-1991) was an architectural and design photographer based in Pacific Palisades. In 1953 he published "Architectural Photography of Houses: How to Take Good Pictures of Exteriors and Interiors," describing his practice.

Acquisition Information

The negatives were donated by the photographer in 1982 and accessioned into the permanent collection in 1993.
